The Claim:
The TRUTH:
Alex Torpey is simply incapable of following through on the multitude of initiatives he has touted for a photo-op or at his speaking engagements. Here are a just a few examples:
Tenure Reform
NJ Utility Preparedness
Village President for a Day
Other
Tenure Reform
- After firing the Municipal Clerk in 2013 without cause and under the pretense of an opposition to tenure, Alex Torpey was quoted in the local media as follows: "Hopefully some productive conversations can come of this with legislators and other interest groups to talk about to how to protect government employees from politically motivated removals/appointments"
- As of May 2015, NO follow-up discussions on the topic ever occurred.
NJ Utility Preparedness
- In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, Alex Torpey wrote a letter to all Mayors in NJ and registered a web domain, njutilitypreparedness.com, with a petition "supporting the push to get state-wide legislative fixes" and "to facilitate the kinds of discussions between us, the BPU and the utility companies that will help bring about meaningful change, as well as advocating for those communities facing the most severe of challenges right now."
- As of May 2015, NO follow-up discussions on the topic ever occurred and the web domain now directs to a Thai gambling site!
Village President for a Day
- In January 2014, Alex Torpey announced that he was instituting a Village President for a Day program and "Each month one student will be selected from a South Orange-Maplewood school to participate in various activities associated with municipal government.".
- After doing this a total of TWO times, the program was quietly discontinued and never heard about again.
